Desert Sky Community School Nurtures the Whole Child

Entering its sixth year, Desert Sky Community School, in Tucson, a tuition-free charter elementary school inspired by Waldorf Education, nurtures not only the head, but the heart and hands of students. The school currently serves children kindergarten through fifth grade and plans growing to serve pre-K through eighth grade.

In kindergarten, children are immersed in a rich curriculum of imaginative play, circle games, acting out stories, singing and artistic and handwork activities that include painting, drawing, sculpting, knitting, and sewing. A healthy daily rhythm, good nutrition and as little electronic media interaction as possible are encouraged at home and at school.

Starting in first grade, children are taught academics in immersion format, spending the first two hours of the day studying a given subject for the five weeks before going on to another academic "main lesson" block, and then spiraling back to the same discipline later in the year for deeper immersion and understanding. The rest of the school day is devoted to singing and instrumental music, multiple foreign languages, arts and crafts, movement and academic practice for core subjects.

Location: 122 N. Craycroft Road. To visit the school or enroll your child, call 520-745-3888 or email Shelly@desertskyschool.org. For more information visit DesertSkySchool.org.
